Biography

Ginko Kawano is a Professor of Sociology of Education and a Special Advisor to the Executive Director and Vice-President for Promoting Gender Equality at Yamagata University in Japan. She also works as a member of the Science Council of Japan and as Director of the International Society for Gender Studies, Japan. She participated in surveys conducted by the Gender Equality Bureau, Cabinet Office, Government of Japan in 2017 and 2018 as a member of an expert committee. She is currently a member of the working team for the committee to formulate The Fifth Basic Plan for Gender Equality, which is being implemented by the Japanese Cabinet Office.

She has conducted diverse research on gender, education and science. Her current project Expanding Female Students’ Career Choices in the STEM Fields through a New Model of Articulation from High School to College – A Four-country Comparison is in progress.
